Pedestrian was killed after being struck by 20-year-old driver Guthrie Hayward

According to a report from the Redwood Times and a California Highway Patrol press release, there was a fatal accident that occurred on February 25 in which a pedestrian identified as Travis Rothwell was killed.

Per the article, the accident occurred at about 1:07 p.m. when the driver of a 2001 Subaru Outback was traveling northbound on the US Highway 101.  The driver was identified by CHP as 20-year-old Guthrie Hayward, who was moving at about 65 MPH, said the article.

Simultaneously, 32-year-old Travis Rothwell ran from the eastern side of CA-101, directly into the path of the Subaru driver.  CHP authorities stated that Hayward took evasive action and veered to the left although he was unable to avoid striking Rothwell.

As a result, Rothwell sustained critical injuries and succumbed to his wounds at the scene as paramedics arrived.

As a result, the northbound lanes of State Route 101 were closed down for nearly three hours while roadway crews moved to clear the debris.

Currently the California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and will report further information as it is determined.  Alcohol and/or drug were factors in the investigation and the conclusion of the investigation will determine if the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or not.
