20-year-old woman killed, passenger airlifted to local hospital after fatal rear-end accident

According to a recent article from NBC San Diego, there was a recent car accident in which a 20-year-old driver was killed and her passenger severely injured on Scripps Poway Parkway near State Route 67.

Per the article, fire officials stated that Samantha Nicole Bennett, 20, was the driver involved in a crash between a 2010 Ford Focus and a Sparkletts  truck, causing a fatal accident with life-threatening injuries to her passenger.

The accident occurred at about 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, and involved the 20-year-old as well as her 19-year-old passenger, and a reportedly broken down Sparkletts truck, said authorities.  The truck was stopped on the shoulder near Sycamore Canyon Road.

Furthermore, authorities have reason to believe that Bennett may have fallen asleep at the wheel, and there was no indication that she attempted to brake right before the vehicle collision occurred.

As a result, the 20-year-old Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene when authorities arrived.  Additionally, it was mentioned that the passenger was asleep at the time of the crash.  The 19-year-old victim’s name was withheld from the press release, although it is known that the victim was partially crushed by the front end of the Ford sedan before rescue crews transported her to Palomar Medical Center via air ambulance.

She suffered a major leg injury, injuries to her pelvis, chest contusions and other injuries, as mentioned in the article.  She is currently in critical condition.

Reportedly, the driver of the Sparkletts truck was also injured in the crash and he was taken to a local hospital.  The article mentioned that before the crash he was simply sitting inside his truck, waiting for a tow truck to arrive.

Currently, this truck accident remains under investigation and authorities are looking for any witnesses who may have any information regarding the accident.  Further information will be available at a later time once the investigation has concluded.
