Miriam Smith arrested on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter

Miriam Smith was arrested in connection to a fatal car crash that killed Robert Lopez in Seaside last Tuesday, said KSBW News.

As mentioned in the article, the crash occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Fremont Boulevard near Charles Avenue, when a minivan driven by Miriam Smith, 59, crashed into a motorcycle.

Authorities responded to the incident and located the 22-year-old motorcyclist identified as Robert Lopez laying on the ground, unconscious.  Paramedics arrived shortly after and attempted to perform CPR before they transported the victim in critical condition to a nearby hospital, the article said.

Unfortunately, Robert Lopez died soon after and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Furthermore, Smith was not injured, according to the report.  She was reportedly emotional at the crash scene.  The Seaside resident was stated to be a local political activist and co-founder of a chapter of Black Lives Matter.

Additionally, police were able to release a statement indicating that alcohol and drugs were not factors contributing to the fatal incident, although they found that Smith was driving with an expired license.  According to the article, the crash was due to “unsafe turning movement” by Smith.

Miriam Smith was arrested as a result and is now facing felony criminal charges.

Currently, this crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the exact cause and liable party in the crash.

Further details will be reported at a later time once the investigation has concluded.
