Man dead after a deadly car crash on the Interstate Highway 5 in Laguna Hills

According to the OC Register, on early Sunday, a patient was hit and killed by a car on the southbound Interstate Highway 5 when he was fleeing away from the hospital.

As mentioned in the article, Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Wayne Rehnelt said his department responded to a call they received Sunday at approximately 4:55 a.m. from Saddleback Regional Medical Center about a patient running away from the hospital.

Deputies found the man with the help of motorists nearby Interstate 5, according to reports.

Reportedly, California Highway Patrol found the patient had run east across two southbound lanes where he was struck by a Volkswagen and died.

The name of the victim was not mentioned in the article, pending the notification of next-of-kin.

California Highway Patrol Officer Rafael Reynoso states the Volkswagen that struck the man was driving southbound at 70 to 75 mph.

As a result, the driver of the Volkswagen was not arrested. This collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and further details will be updated as they are available.
