Cristobal Tapia backed out vehicle and into path of motorcycle leading to fatal accident

According to a recent article from The Californian, there was a fatal motorcycle collision that occurred Saturday near a driveway on River Road and Pine Canyon Road in Salinas leaving one motorcyclist dead.

As mentioned in the article, motorcyclist James Andrew Smith, 51, of Monterey, was riding his 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the northbound lanes of River Road by Pine Canyon Road.

Sources stated that Smith attempted to pass another vehicle traveling north before a driver identified as Cristobal Tapia, 36, backed her 2000 Honda Accord out of a private driveway.  The motorcycle was unable to avoid a collision with the sedan, and as a result, the accident occurred.

The front of the Honda struck the motorcycle, causing Smith to eject out from his motorcycle.

California Highway Patrol responded to the accident and declared Smith dead at the scene of the accident.

Currently, the crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the cause of the accident and liability.  According to CHP, alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the motorcycle crash.
