Newspaper-delivering husband and wife are fatally injured by intoxicated driver in crash

According to a local news article from ABC, Daniel Mendez and Ramonda Mendez killed in a DUI-related car crash on Kings Canyon Road near Temperance in Fresno on early Saturday.

The accident occurred in Southeast Fresno just before 3:00 a.m. when a husband and wife duo were on their paper delivery route for the Fresno Bee on Saturday early morning.

Reportedly, an intoxicated driver struck the married couple’s Honda at about 80 miles per hour in his Toyota.  Authorities say he was driving while intoxicated.

Additionally, the driver was identified as 26-year-old Michael Meritt-Hutchins.  He was trapped inside his car and had to be extracted by first responders before being transported to CRMC for moderate injuries.

Daniel Mendez and Ramonda, his wife, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news article.

According to authorities, the driver is potentially facing DUI charges and vehicular manslaughter.

Currently, the traffic collision is being investigated by the authorities, and further information will be relayed at a later time.
