Huntington Beach, CA (December 9, 2019) – A man who was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle this weekend has been declared brain dead as of Sunday, December 8th. Police stated that the victim was hit on Friday, December 6th, at the intersection of Gothard Street and Heil Avenue in Huntington Beach at around 6:30 a.m.
According to the Huntington Beach Police Department, a 57-year-old man from Anaheim was riding a bicycle at or near the intersection when he was hit by a 2003 Ford Expedition. Medical crews were dispatched to the scene immediately, and the victim was transported to the University of California Irvine Medical Center in Orange.
The victim was admitted with major trauma but classified as brain dead two days later. He remains in critical condition.
The 34-year-old male driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and police are currently investigating the cause of the collision.
Our thoughts are with the victim and his family at this time.
According to research, a large percentage of bicyclists who are struck and killed by cars are males over the age of 40. Irrespective of gender or age, bicycle accidents in California tend to result in devastating or deadly injuries because of the susceptibility of riders at the time of a crash.
